The coast of Athens

The coastal side of Athens is also the most beautiful. The sight of Aegen sea on the side, makes you feel as if you were on an island instead.

There is a large number of marinas, and we take you through the best of them. Further down the Athens Riviera we reach Vouliagmeni Lake, where you can even choose to swim in its magnificent water.

Cape Sounion is on the end of the Attica peninsula, the ancient temple of Poseidon rests there and when the sun sets the view and the spectacle are unparalleled.

The Bay of Zea, is a broad bay located at the eastern coast of the Piraeus peninsula in Attica, Greece. It hosted the swimming events at the 1896 Summer Olympics held in Attica. A seaport and marina are in the bay.

During ancient times this bay was the biggest military harbour, where the fleet of triremes were built. Following its renovation in 2004 in relation to the 2004 Summer Olympics, the seaport now has a total of 670 berths for boats up to 150 meters in length and up to 10 meters in draught.

Known also as Kastella. This is a fashionable neighborhood in Piraeus. On the top of the hill is a Greek Orthodox church named after the Prophet Elijah. The narrow streets around the church are surrounded by picturesque houses.

The Veakeio Theater, known for its summer performances is located here. In 403 BCE, Athenian democrats defeated forces of the Thirty Tyrants at the Battle of Munychia. In Antiquity there was also a local festival to Artemis.

This is a modern, marina with a large number of private yachts. Maybe one of the most upscale neiborhoods of Athens, with some of the finest restaurants and café-bars. A park for child activities is also located at the spot.

The lagoon formed about 2,000 years ago. It was once a large cavern that collapsed following an earthquake. The outline of the collapsed cavern roof can be clearly discerned from a distance.

The lake has quite unique environmental conditions: it is supplied with warm seawater (28-35°C) via an underground channel spreading through a network of flooded caves, so its temperature never drops below 18 °C (usually ranges around 21-24 °C), whereas a freshwater spring reduces its salinity to brackish levels (14.5-18 psu).

It continues deep inside the mountain in an underwater cave never fully explored, as its end seems impossible to trace even by employing sonar detection.

Many underwater expeditions have been carried out in order to chart it, and a few amateur divers have drowned trying. Because of its constant warm water temperature and its rich content in hydrogen sulphide, the lake functions as a spa since the end of the 19th century.

The Temple of Poseidon is an ancient Greek temple on Cape Sounion, Greece, dedicated to the god Poseidon.

There is evidence of the establishment of sanctuaries on the cape from as early as the 11th century B.C. Sounion’s most prominent temples, the Temple of Athena and the Temple of Poseidon, are however not believed to have been built until about 700 B.C., and them kouroi (Freestanding Greek statues of young men) date from about one hundred years later.

The material and size of the offerings at the Temple of Poseidon indicate that it was likely frequented by members of the elite and the aristocratic class. The Greeks considered Poseidon to be the “master of the sea”.

Given the importance to Athens of trade by sea and the significance of its navy in its creation and survival during the fifth century, Poseidon was of a particular relevance and value to the Athenians.

Yabanaki, is a popular and well organised beach. It is sandy and shallow with many additional facilities for sports, water sports and restaurants.
